#361: Indirect Window Lighting/Class Assignment
Even though I have my nieces in town, I have a big assignment due Tuesday for my Outdoor and Ambient Lighting Photography class. This assignment asks us to shoot something in indirect light coming from a window. We are supposed to use the light to sculpt shape and define form. I've gotten myself into another class where the professor only really likes gritty urban scenes, so he was very "meh" about my twilight lighting pictures which featured scenes at Sonoma. For instance on the shot of a lit stone staircase leading up to a Sonoma twilight featuring outlined Cypress and oaks, he thought I should have put a pair of red high heels on the stairs as the picture, to him, was a staircase to nowhere.
Well, I'm having a hard time finding something gritty and urban to take into my house and photograph by a window, so these cowboy boot salt and pepper shakers (given to us by Noe and Drive) will have to do. Our latest reading has been all about the difficulties of lighting and shooting metal surfaces, so I hope I get some credit for trying that out.
Thor Powered Indirect 01
I took this picture, and the following three pictures, of the tug "Thor" while inbound on the Houston Ship Channel aboard a large crude oil tanker. Currently, an escort tug is require on all vessels with a draft in excess of 40'.
On this particular, we had very little traffic to meet, so the conning pilot decided to take the opportunity to "practice" some emergency manuevers with the tug. This particular manuever is referred to as a "Powered Indirect" whereby the tug essentially, drive into his line. The manuever is used to either control or initiate the "swing rate" (how fast a ship turns) of a ship.
